The name

Stone for permanence. Oak for warmth.

Two materials, two promises. Everything we deliver has to be precise on day one and better on day three thousand.

Ashlar/ˈæʃ.lər/ · noun

Stone cut square and dressed true on every face, so that each block sits exactly against the next. It is how the great houses were built. For us it means tolerances, inspection and pieces that fit the room they were drawn for.

Oak/oʊk/ · noun

The timber of heirlooms: slow-grown, honest about its grain, and better with every year it is lived with. For us it means materials chosen to age well, and rooms meant to be used every day, not kept for show.

Who we serve

Two kinds of client. One standard.

Homeowners who would rather not spend a year choosing chairs, and founders who need a space that wins clients the day it opens. Both buy certainty.

The Collections

Five complete design languages.

You do not start from a blank page. You choose a Collection, a tested set of materials, proportions, lighting and art, and we compose it for your rooms.

The standard

Four numbers we hold ourselves to.

These are commitments written into every engagement.

Before anything is made

You hold the room in your hands.

Once you approve the concept, we send a fitted oak box with every material in your scheme: the stone, the timber and its finish, the fabrics, the leather and the hardware.

Nothing goes into production until you have seen it in your own light and signed for it. It is the second of your three signatures, and the moment most clients tell us they stopped worrying.

From first call to handover

A clear path, with nothing left to chance.

Every engagement follows the same seven stages. You are asked to decide three times. We check the work at every stage.

  1. Conversation

We meet at the property or by video, walk the rooms and hear how they will be used.

Questions

What clients ask first.

If your question is not here, ask it on our first call.

What does Ashlar & Oak actually deliver?

Everything that makes a room finished: furniture, joinery such as wardrobes and wall panelling, lighting, art, rugs, textiles and objects. We design it, source it, inspect it, deliver it and install it. You receive a room ready to live in or open for business.

How does the 72-hour concept work?

After a first conversation and a visit or floor plan, we return within 72 hours with a complete concept: layout, palette, the specific pieces, renderings and a fixed price. There is no charge for the concept. If you go ahead, the design fee is included in the package price.

Do I have to choose everything myself?

No. You choose one of our Collections, each a complete and tested design language, and we make the hundreds of decisions inside it. You sign off three times: the concept, the physical materials, and the finished room.

How long does a project take?

Signature Rooms and clinic openings typically take 10 to 14 weeks from signed concept to handover. A whole residence typically takes 14 to 20 weeks. We confirm your timeline in the concept, piece by piece.

Where are the pieces made?

With partner workshops and makers we have vetted and visit, in the United States, Asia and Europe. Every piece is documented with its maker, materials and country of origin, and every lighting fixture carries UL or ETL certification. Ask us about any piece and we will tell you exactly where it came from.

Do you handle construction, plumbing or electrical work?

No. We furnish and finish. Where a project needs an electrician or a structural trade, licensed professionals carry out that work and we coordinate the schedule so that it does not hold up your handover.

How are payments structured?

Fifty percent on signing, forty percent before the pieces ship, and the final ten percent after you have walked the finished room with your design director and signed the handover.

Which areas do you serve?

We work across the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and New York, and accept projects elsewhere by arrangement.

The 72-hour concept

Begin with a conversation.

Tell us about the space and the date it needs to be ready. Within 72 hours of our first meeting you will have a complete concept: plan, palette, the pieces and a fixed price.
