Ashlar & Oak

The Atelier

Craft is a promise. Inspection keeps it.

Our studio designs, specifies, inspects and installs. Our pieces are made by partner workshops we have vetted and visit: joiners, upholsterers, finishers, metalworkers and art ateliers, each chosen for one thing they do exceptionally well.

Seven gates

Nothing reaches your home untested.

Three gates need your signature. Four are ours. Our payment terms with makers hold back part of their fee until your room is signed off, so everyone is working toward the same handover.

Partner workshops

Named makers. Visible hands.

We will introduce you to the workshops behind your pieces: who they are, what they specialise in, and photographs of your work in progress.

  • Joinery in solid timber, mortise and tenon where the design calls for it
  • Upholstery on kiln-dried hardwood frames
  • Finishing by hand-applied oils, waxes and lacquers
  • Lighting assembled to UL or ETL listing

We describe how each piece is made exactly as it is made. If a piece is machine-cut and hand-finished, that is what we tell you.

Provenance

Every piece, on the record.

Your care book lists every item in your rooms with its maker, materials, finish and country of origin.

Materials you can trust

Composite wood that meets CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI formaldehyde standards. Upholstery that meets California TB117-2013. Every certificate kept on file.

Art made to brief

Every commissioned piece is documented: the design study you approved, its materials, its dimensions and its maker.

Origin stated plainly

We tell you where each piece was made. Ask about any item and you will get a straight answer, with paperwork.

The handover

The day you walk in.

We finish the way we start: in person.

  • Your director walks every room with you and lists any snag, however small
  • The rooms are professionally photographed for you to keep
  • A handwritten handover card
  • A bound care book: every piece, its maker and how to look after it
  • Warranty begins on the day you sign

Tools

Modern tools. A designer’s eye.

We use advanced digital design and visualisation tools so that you see your rooms accurately and quickly. Every drawing, rendering and selection is reviewed and approved by your design director before it reaches you.
